The University of Nebraska Press, founded in 1941, is a publisher of scholarly and popular-press books. It is the second-largest state university press in the United States (behind the University of California Press) and, including private institutions, ranks among the 10 largest university presses in the United States. The press is under the auspices of the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, the flagship campus of the University of Nebraska system.
The press publishes approximately 100 titles annually and has more than 2,500 titles in print. It publishes primarily non-fiction books and scholarly journals, along with a few titles per season in contemporary and regional prose and poetry.
The press is one of the leading translators of French literature in the U.S. and has an extensive translation program that focuses primarily on French, German, and Spanish writers. The program of publishing international fiction and literary nonfiction at the Press has garnered notice in recent years. The Los Angeles Times named the press one of only three publishing companies in America "to reliably, season after season, produce significant translations."
The University of Nebraska Press is publisher of the scholarly editions of the works of Willa Cather, including classics My Antonia and O Pioneers!. The books are produced under the direction of Sue Rosowski, UNL's Adele Hall Distinguished Professor of English, and a team of scholars from 11 universities.
Through its trade paperback imprint, Bison Books, it publishes reprints of classic books from various genres. Bison's Bison Frontiers of Imagination series has brought back into print a number of science fiction and fantasy classics.
In September 2011, the University of Nebraska Press entered into a new collaborative publishing arrangement with the Jewish Publication Society, one of the oldest Jewish publishers in the United States. Under the agreement, the press purchased all of JPS's outstanding book inventory, and will become responsible for the production, distribution, and marketing of JPS's existing 250 titles as well as new projects, effective January 1, 2012. The press's current director, Donna Shear, had been marketing and sales director for JPS in the mid-1990s.**
